One account can keep several boats: a family's sailboat and the motorboat at the cabin, a boat you are selling and the one you bought. Everything in this guide is about one boat at a time, and that does not change: you are always aboard one boat, and every area shows that boat. With one boat nothing in this chapter appears.

Aboard one boat

The boat you are aboard is the one Today, Work, Logbook, Boat and the search show. Each device remembers which boat it is aboard, so the phone can be aboard the sailboat while the laptop is aboard the motorboat. Changing boats changes nothing in the record; nothing is synced for it.

Addresses stay the same for every boat: Work is Work on whichever boat you are aboard. A link to one record (a job in the weekly email, an event in the calendar, a row in Sync problems, a link from an assistant) takes you aboard that record's boat first, then shows the record.

Your boats

With two or more boats, the boat card at the top of the sidebar (the boat's name at the top of the screen on a phone) opens Your boats: one row per boat, with its photo or letter, its name and one line of what it needs. The line is the same one Today's Other boats shows:

The row of the boat you are aboard opens its Boat details. Any other row boards that boat: the app shows its Today from the top and says "Aboard Mira". The last row is Add a boat. The search lists "Board" and the name for every other boat, and Your boats.

Other boats on Today

Today ends with Other boats: a row for each of your other boats with the same line, so you can see which boat needs you without leaving the one you are on. Choosing a row boards that boat. Today never adds numbers across boats; the one place that does is Budget.

Add a boat

Add a boat is in Your boats, on the Your boats card under Settings > Account, and in the search. It takes you through the same four steps as your first boat: the boat, its engine, the usual service plans, and what else is aboard. The new boat is boarded as soon as the first step is saved, and every later step is for the new boat. Leaving after any step keeps what was saved.

The first step also asks Carried by: leave it empty for a boat that sails on its own. A boat carried by another (a tender on its mothership) uses that boat's currency, clock and units, and is never boarded: see Carried boats. For a carried boat, the last step offers a small set (lifejackets, and an anchor, navigation lights, flares and a first aid kit to tick) and no checklists, since its checklists are the mothership's. To move equipment, an item or a document from one boat to another, see Moving between boats.

Only the owner adds, archives and deletes boats. People with access see every boat.

Carried boats

A tender, a dinghy that lives on the davits, a kayak: a boat that rides on another is carried by it. It has what a boat has, papers, a photo, its own equipment, engine hours, fuel fills, jobs, plans, problems, documents and expenses, but no trips, checklists, inventory, people, places or projects of its own: those are the boat that carries it. A trip in the dinghy is a log entry on the mothership's trip.

A carried boat is never boarded. Aboard the boat that carries it:

A link to a carried boat's record (a job in the weekly email, say) takes you aboard the boat that carries it.

A boat and the boats it carries share what they link to. A job on the tender can need a spare stowed on the mothership, an item on the mothership can fit the tender's outboard (its page shows the usual Parts), engine hours for the outboard can be recorded on the mothership's trip, and a mothership project can list the tender's outboard. Each record still belongs to one boat; only the links cross.

The Boat row on forms

While the boat you are aboard carries another, these forms start with a Boat row: Add equipment, Record (engine hours), Something's wrong, Add a document, Add an expense, Add a job and Add a plan. It offers the boat you are aboard and the boats it carries, and says which boat the new record belongs to; the equipment, trips and other records the form offers then come from that boat. It starts on the boat whose page you opened the form from, else on the boat you are aboard. A form opened for one record, such as Something's wrong on the outboard's page, is fixed to that record's boat. With no carried boat there is no Boat row.

Make this a boat

If you kept your tender as equipment (an Inflatable tender with a Tender outboard under it), turn it into a carried boat: open the tender's equipment page and choose Make this a boat in More. Only the owner can. After you confirm:

The activity list says it on both boats ("Moved Zodiac 310 to Zodiac 310", "Zodiac 310 arrived from Freya"). To undo it, restore the archived tender from the Archive and delete the new boat under Former boats.

Your boats in Settings

Settings > Account has a Your boats card: each boat, with the boats it carries under it. A boat's row opens its Boat details (boarding it); a carried boat's row opens its page, aboard the boat that carries it. More holds Archive. Boat details' More holds Make this boat carried by… and Set adrift, which ends the carrying.

Archive a boat you sold: everything recorded on it is kept, and it leaves Your boats, Today, the weekly email and the calendar. Archived boats wait under Former boats on the same card: see Selling a boat. The only boat that sails on its own cannot be archived. Archiving the boat you are aboard takes you aboard the oldest other boat that sails on its own, and says so.

Moving between boats

A piece of equipment, an item or a document can move to another boat of the account: the outboard bought for the new tender, the spare that belongs on the other boat, a manual filed on the wrong boat. Choose Move to another boat in the More menu of the equipment's page (or its row on the Equipment list), the item's page or the document's page. Anyone with access can; the choice appears only when there is another boat to move to.

The dialog offers the other boats that sail on their own and the boats the one you are aboard carries; an item only goes to a boat that sails on its own, since a carried boat keeps no items. It says what goes too, before you move:

Between a boat and a boat it carries, every link stays. To a boat of its own, the links that could not cross are removed and the dialog says so ("Its links to what stays on Freya are removed: 2 items"): items of the old boat stop fitting moved equipment, moved plans and jobs drop the old boat's items and checklists, a moved item stops fitting the old boat's equipment, and a moved document is detached from the old boat's records. Anything else linked to what would move keeps it from moving, and the dialog names it: a project or a trip's problem that lists the equipment, a kit, a plan or an open job that needs the item, a record whose photo the document is, an expense whose receipt it is. Remove those links, then move.

The activity list says it on both boats ("Moved Yamaha 6 to Freya", "Yamaha 6 arrived from Zodiac 310").

Selling a boat

When a boat is sold, Archive it under Settings > Account > Your boats. Everything recorded on it is kept, read-only, under Former boats:

The dossier of any boat, archived or not, is also on Settings > Sync and backup: with two or more boats, What to download offers the whole account (the default) or one boat.

Copying people and places

People and places belong to one boat. When a person who sails on one boat also sails on another, or two boats share a home marina, copy them: at the end of the People list and the Places list, and in the choosers that pick them (who came on a trip, From and To, the home port), Copy from Mira… lists Mira's people or places that this boat has none of by name. Copy on a row makes it on the boat you are aboard with the same details; a place keeps its position, not its home flag. The copy is a record of its own: changing one does not change the other. From a chooser inside a form, the form waits while you copy; come back to it with the button at the top.

Budget across boats

With two or more boats, Budget starts with This boat and All boats; the device remembers the choice. This boat is the usual forecast for the boat you are aboard, with the boats it carries. All boats shows one block per currency, a row per boat with what it is expected to cost in the next 12 months and what was paid, and one sum per block. Amounts in different currencies are never added together.

The season recap stays one boat's year, and its heading names the boat.

The weekly email and the calendar

The weekly email is still one email: a part for each boat that sails on its own, with the boats it carries inside it. A boat with nothing to report is one line ("Mira: all quiet"). The calendar link is still one calendar; each event's title starts with its boat's name ("Freya · Job: Oil change"), and a carried boat's events carry the name of the boat that carries it.

What assistants see

An assistant sees the boats you grant it. A token made by hand under Settings > Assistants, and the emailed sign-in link's confirmation page, offer All boats, including ones added later (the default) or a choice of boats; signing in with a password grants every boat. A carried boat comes with the boat that carries it. Each connection's row says which boats it may reach, and each waiting approval names its boat.

An assistant lists your boats with vessel_list and names the boat in its answers when there are several. Questions across boats, such as what needs doing or what boating costs, are answered for every granted boat in one call, each row naming its boat. A change always needs a boat: when the record does not say which, the assistant must ask you rather than guess.

For an assistant

  1. Call vessel_list before you assume which boat. Pass vesselId on every call that makes a record; a call with a record's id reaches that record's boat by itself.
  2. Name the boat in every answer when the owner has several, and never add amounts in two currencies.
  3. A record refers only to records of its own household: its boat, the boat carrying it and the boats that one carries. A tender's job may need the mothership's spare; a job on Mira may not. The server refuses anything else with "That record belongs to another boat."
  4. A carried boat's records come with its carrier. readiness_get, work_list and equipment_list for the carrying boat include its carried boats' rows, each naming its boat; a new record for the tender needs the tender's vesselId.
  5. Move, never recreate. equipment_move, inventory_item_move and document_move move a record to another boat (vesselId is where it goes) with what rides with it, and need the owner's approval, which names both boats. People and places are copied with crew_create and waypoint_create on the other boat.
